One day during my time studying in London, I photographed eggs I had just bought at a supermarket. Before putting them in the refrigerator, I lined them up along the grout lines of the kitchen tiles and took a photograph. There is no particular intention behind it.
When I was still living with my grandparents and mother, there were a few occasions when we tried to stand eggs upright on the day of Risshun—the beginning of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar. It is said to be a good omen if an egg stands on that day. In fact, however, eggs can stand upright at any time of the year. It is only relatively recently that this has become widely recognized scientifically.
Even so, people continue to stand eggs on the day of Risshun and wish for happiness in the coming year. Behind this small gesture, I cannot help but feel that something essential about human wishes and beliefs quietly persists.

ロンドン留学中のある日。スーパーで買ってきた卵を冷蔵庫にしまう前に、キッチンのタイルの目地に沿って並べ、写真を撮った。 特に深い意味はない。
祖父母や母とまだ同じ家に暮らしていた頃、立春の日に卵を立てたことが、数えるほどだがあった。その日に卵を立てることができると縁起がいいとされているが、実のところ、卵は一年を通していつでも立てることができる。それが科学的に広く認知されたのは、意外にも近年のことだという。
事実として証明されてもなお、人々は立春の日に卵を立て、一年の幸せを願う。そのささやかな行為の裏側に、願いや信仰というものの本質が静かに息づいているような気がしてならない。
