“And Then／それから”（2025）
本書は、近年撮影した写真を見返す中で、それらの多くがすでに手元を離れていることに気づいたことをきっかけに制作された。とはいえ、河野が目指したのは「失われたオブジェの目録」を作ることではない。テキストは写真を説明するキャプションとして添えられておらず、写真と隣り合う言葉とのあいだにも明確な関係性はない。独自のレイアウトによって、両者のあいだから立ち現れるイメージは、ページをめくるたびにふっと浮かび上がり、そしてまた消えていくような印象を与える。
タイトルが示すとおり、本作の視線は「かつてそこにあったもの」への郷愁ではなく、「失ったその後」へと向けられている。これは、詩人・谷川俊太郎による詩『そのあと』（2013年）への静かなオマージュでもある。私たちは気づかぬうちに多くのものを手放しながら、同時に、新たな何かを手にしながら生きている。経年変化が顕著にあらわれる用紙の選定も、このテーマと深く共鳴している。時間の流れをたたえたその手触りは、過去と現在を同時に感じさせる羅針盤のようであり、私たちの中に眠る無数の「そのあと」を、静かに照らし出してくれるだろう。
This book arose out of the realization that many of the subjects in the photographs Kono captured in recent years had already slipped beyond his reach. However, he did not aim to create a catalogue of lost objects. The texts do not function as captions for the images, nor is there a definitive or fixed relationship between the words and the accompanying photographs. The distinctive arrangement of image and text generates fleeting impressions that emerge and dissolve with each turn of the page.
As its title suggests, the book does not dwell on nostalgia for the past but instead turns its attention to what follows loss. It offers a subtle homage to the poem Sono Ato (“Afterward,” 2013) by Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa. Unbeknownst to us, we are constantly letting go of things while simultaneously acquiring new ones. The choice of paper―one that visibly changes over time―resonates deeply with this theme. Its tactile quality, imbued with the passage of time, functions as a kind of compass: simultaneously evoking past and present, and gently illuminating the countless “and thens” that lie dormant within us.
